Do Xbox Live Arcade games require Internet connection to play?

I currently have an Xbox live subscription (Gold) and would like to purchase an Xbox Live Arcade title (Chessmaster). I have two questions regarding this purchase. 1. Would I have to be connected to the Internet and therefore Xbox Live to play the game if I am playing against someone sitting next to me. 2. If I decide not to renew my Gold membership in a year, would I lose access to the game, even though I purchased it?

  6. 1) You don't have to connect to Xbox Live to play the game unless you download the game again on another 360 with the same account. 2) If you don't renew you Gold membership, you will still be able to play the game. You could, in fact, buy more XBLA titles if you wanted. Xbox Live Marketplace only requires a Silver membership (which is free) to purchase and download content.
