What did the buttons on the right hand side of Pac Man arcade games do?

I remember a joy stick to the left and two buttons to the right (perhaps blue and yellow) but what were those buttons for? To eat the dots?

1. No. They are there to start the game and that's it. You press one button if there is one player and the other one if there are two players.
