How do I play online games with a Playstation 3 or Xbox?

I am choosing whether to get an Xbox or Playstation 3 - I can get either free with my new phone tariff. I was wondering how I would be able to play online games. My HD TV is in one room, but my cable broadband connection (which has a wireless router) is in another. Would I be able to connect?
