Game Plugs

Does online play run out on sports games? For example, would I be able to play nba 2k8 once nba 2k9 comes out?

Or any game for that matter. Once the next installment comes out, does that mean I can no longer play the previous version online? Game examples: Call of Duty, Tiger Woods, Madden, NHL games, etc. I know the Halo franchise still plays the older games, but do all of them?
