arcade games 1990?

what is the name of this classic arcade game before 1990 about a 2D scroller adventure/role playing game where there's a little boy with a sword and he could walk around and upgrade his armor/weapons it was kind of like a role playing game because other 2D scrollers didnt have the option to buy weapons and armor.
