What are some good free online games?

I would like to know what are some good free games. I am not looking for the games like poker and solitaire or even the cheesy puzzle games but the good ones like project torque where you download it and can play online against others. My brother plays a game that is kind of like socom and he downloaded it for free. If anyone can direct me to one that would be great.
