How do you get more saved games on Spore?

The newest Maxis game, Spore, is the game in question. In the main menu (the galaxy part) there are several saved game slots. I recently ran out of room due to the fact that many people play on my profile, (at least six) and they took up all the saved games. Is there a way to get more? If you delete an existing one does it come back later?
