Are the new Pokemon games playable online?

ok so my friend and i are thinking about getting the new pokemon game Pokemon: Soul Silver. He says that in Diamond and Pearl you were able to trade pokemon online. i was wondering if this is the same for Soul Silver and Heart Gold and if we would be able to battle online. THANKS! **EDIT*** also what if we both have original nintendo DS's? will we still be able to play?
