why do you needjava for pogo .com games?

I'm trying to play at pogo .com whitch is a free site full of games buy they want me to download java. What is java.?

2. i think that its a program that is used for running games sometimes it makes me downlode shok wave. some games though dont use those things to run but run on there own (WHY CAANT ALL GAMES DO THAT!!?!?!?!!)
3. yeah i also went to pogo.com and i can't play because i haven't install java software in my computer i try to install it and it said download succesful and when i went to pogo to play games it said that the java software is not detected in your computer, java is a progam that runs devices for more details go to www.java.com and if u can't play on pogo.com because of this problem u can go to games.atari.com where u don't need java software to play and u can play with different people around the world.
